2024 May 25 Finished Compost

There’s no better deadline to get garden chores done than a friend coming to town. Our friend Mandi is going to be here at noon, so I made a list and accomplished it with enough time for a shower. Today is compost day!

I don’t really know the method you’re supposed to do with a compost tumbler. Here’s my method. I pulled out the old tarp and put it under the composter. Then I turned it real good and opened it up. It was a dirty job, but since it was finished compost it was not smelly or anything. I was pleasantly surprised with what came out.

Finished compost from the Sun Mar 200. I never really used the composter deliberately until this year.

After that, Chickaletta inspected the heap. She’s excellent at composting.

I decided on the fly to make a new garden bed for the tomatoes we started. So I turned over some grass. I did disturb the soil. I know tilling is bad. Weighing the benefits, I decided to get rid of the grass monoculture, and amended the soil with organic matter. We’ll call that a win still. Chickaletta agreed it was a good move.

This is where I’ll plant the tomatoes we started.
New tomato bed for this year. We planted Roma and mixed Cherry Tomatoes. Of course I’ll be rotating crops so it’ll be a different vegetable next year.
