2024 May 18 Whats in bloom?
Update on the big pond fish: still kicking! We added some real and fake pond plants for him to find cover and he’s using them.
Now that the Golden Ragwort Packera aurea* has gone to seed, and the first Giant Alliums (ornamental) have pretty much toppled over, we have some other favorites in bloom!
Virginia Spiderwort Tradescanthia virginiana
The Pink Evening Primrose Oenothera speciosa just started to bloom yesterday. I’m excited to show what it’ll look like in a few days. The Red Clover and an ornamental Giant Allium are also popping up around it.
I believe this is Ohio Spiderwort Tradescanthia ohensis
Creeping Charlie is pretty. Pretty hard to contain.
We have Asparagus Beetles on our asparagus for the first time. I pulled this and threw it out. There were eggs all over. The Canada Anemone Anemonastrum canadense is looking AWESOME this year. This is a beautiful native ground cover.
The spring Fleabane Erigeron annuus is a favorite native. We have always had them and people said the were “weeds”! Imagine that!
My dad and Grandma Alice Welch always loved Irises.
*in this blog, I will give Latin names for any native plants I’m identifying.
