2024 June 28 New Community Garden Plot

Carli wanted to take a scooter ride up to the community garden all day. We love to see what’s growing and how different people design their 10’ by 10’ plots. I put my name on the waiting list for a community garden plot a long time ago and never heard back. When we arrived, Madison Park Community Garden Leader Dave Bosley was there and he let us in and showed us around. Then he pointed out a neglected plot with a blue tarp over it. As we got to talking he offered for us to take that one over. Later, he checked in with the current owner, who said they were unable to care for it this year. So it became ours. I’ll post the before picture at the end.

Our back yard is now mostly shade. We want to have some fresh organic veggies. I have dreams of canning salsas and sauces. Carli loves fresh cucumbers. The best we could do at our house is a half-shade tomato spot and some peppers Inter planted our front. Luckily, when I told my coworker Ryan about the plot, he said he had some extra pepper starts! Sweet! We are rocking and rolling.

These mystery Peppers are marked “BIG”. I imagine they are Bell Peppers.

We left the strawberries, which look done for the season, and planted in 12 peppers, 4 tomatoes, and two eggplants. We had potted up some extra tomatoes and eggplants that we started from seed this year, so they were perfect for replanting.

Top left are the Strawberries, bottom left are the Peppers, middle are the Tomatoes, and front are the Eggplants. Carli put seeds in the right!

My sister April came by to visit while Carli popped in some special seeds she selected. Hopefully there’s still time for these plants to mature this season!

We accidentally bought potting soil, so there’s a lot of perlite going on. Not a big problem. While it was pretty dry, the soil underneath the tarp didn’t look too bad. Hopefully we’ll get some compost and mulch on top by next week. Rain is in the forecast, so hopefully the transplants can take root without much sun damage!

We have big plans for the fall garden too!
