2024 June 12 What’s in Bloom?
Phlox paniculata
(When I give the Latin name in this blog, I’m typically indicating that this is a native species -or if it’s clearly an indoor plant)
Shasta Daisy (non-native perennial)
This Bigleaf Hydrangea is not native
(Ohio has a native hydrangea though- Smooth Leaf Hydrangea arborescens and Oak Leaf Hydrangea quercifolia)
Threadleaf Coreopsis Coreopsis verticillata
Bee Balm Monarda (This is a native cultivar. The native Bee Balm is red Monarda didyma or light pink Monarda fistulosa. We planted this before we realized that true natives are better for the environment)
Yarrow (This, too is a cultivar. True native Achillea millefolium is white or yellow)
This is a true native milkweed Butterfly Weed Asclepias tuberosa. The milkweeds are VERY important to get right for your area. The tropical version of this is actually harmful to the Monarch migration in Ohio and the north)
Inside the house, the Chinese Money Plant Pilea peperomoides bloomed. Our indoor plants are definitely not native, but I’m giving the Latin names to not confuse them with other common names.
Common Milkweed Asclepias syriaca with our lovely monarch caterpillar munching away. We have not spotted any more…
