2024 April 17 Spring is Springing

The smell and feel of light rain. The wild symphony of birdsong. This morning is what I dream all winter about. The Pine Warblers are back in town with the Yellow Rumped Warblers. I saw one Canada Goose on the loose honking overhead, Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker, Gold Crowned Kinglets, Ruby Crowned Kinglets, Phoebes…and a Starling that sang the tunes of the Cedar Waxwing, Eastern Meadowlark and Killdeer. All the regulars joined in too. Amazing.

This is just a small selection of my bird friends out there today. Do you have the Merlin app? It’s free from the CornellLab and you can track the birds you hear. Don’t get tricked by the Starlings though, the Eastern Meadowlark is probably not in your backyard.

It’s funny how I waited and waited for the Button Bush, Bloodroot and Winterberry, but they came perfectly on time yesterday, just after I did the work of pulling up the butterfly bushes. After class, I only had a few minutes to do my evening routine before dark. When I opened the package for the button bushes, I discovered 3! I planted 2, but I really Dont have room for another. I contacted my friend Emily on Carabel, but she already has two. I need to make a friend I guess.

After school today, I’m going to drop by the CIHS school garden. They requested help in identifying some plants as either weed or native flower. I live that game.

When I get home, I need to clean out the pond filter. It’s just a trickle and I’m not sure why. Then I have to plant the winterberry bushes. I am pluralizing because i think there is more than one stem too. This is the fun of Spring! Meanwhile, I have to go to work inside and try to be present with the kids. It’s had to be somewhere that doesn’t feel right anymore.

This is Spring. It’s potential energy just waiting for that perfect moment, then KABLAM! It’s time to move!

The light rain is back and I better get moving to work!
