4 July 2026 “Relaxation” and Winter Sowing Update

I have about triple this amount of native perennials started from the winter seed sowing. This makes my heart happy to know that so many more native plants will find their homes in other places. Pictured top left clockwise: Pawpaw, Poke Milkweed, Swollen Sunflower, Northern Sea Oats, Beebalm, and Smooth Climbing Hydrangea in the middle.

The horoscope for Capricorn says I need to relax today. Maybe heading to the fireworks tonight with a friend counts. My relaxation is doing my activities. I baked two zucchini breads and transplanted four of my winter sowing containers while they were in the oven. I had an audiobook going, so my mind could rest with someone else’s words.

I first came across this title when touring the grounds of the Frank Lloyd Wright house, Falling Water. I’m halfway through and the timing is perfect.

This book, The Nature of Our Cities, by Nadine Galle,  is exactly what I needed to read after the heat wave and two-day power outages here. She is presenting the problems of urban heat and natural vegetative solutions, which are so similar to the work I get to do. I wish more people would read this book. Maybe I’ll start a book club in my “free time”.
