2025 Soft Landing Plan
As soon as I got the assignment to plan a soft landing for a neglected little spot on one of our community green infrastructure sites, I started my plan. I wanted to be mindful of the butterfly and moth species that each plant would attract, as well as some aesthetic components for the neighbors. Below are the plans as written, along with a couple of graphs to help visualize the height and bloom colors throughout the growing season.
The letters next to the colored dots correspond to each of the plants described above.
This timeline shows the bloom time for the flowers chosen above and the trees/shrubs below. I intentionally chose flowers so that there would always be something beautiful happening. There were even berries chosen for winter interest.
An important component of a soft landing is to address multiple forest layers. Native shrubs, tall wildflowers, medium wildflowers and shorter groundcover plants attract all different types of wildlife.
