2025 November 10 First Frost and Snow

It has been chilly in the morning for about two weeks. I did have some frost on my windshield last week, but nothing I needed to scrape off. Some leaves have fallen from trees, but there are still many oranges and yellows up in the tallest parts. Up until today my Mexican Marigolds and my Zinnias still looked alive. The snow, however, is unmistakable. Winter weather is here in Lakewood.

I tried to capture the Song Sparrow diving into the tallest grasses, but she didn’t pop back out. The bird habitat is another reason I resist fall cleanup in my own yard. This is a restoration site on Hemlock Lane.

I started this blog to have a way to keep track of the seasonal patterns. The best way to predict the future is to look at the past. First frost is a very important date for gardeners. We calculate our fall and winter gardens by subtracting weeks from the first frost date. Most of our food will not survive the frost. Life got in the way of my fall plantings this year. Last year we had some carrots and garlic overwintering in our plot.

It was a nice day to go into work today. Our crew had the Veteran’s Day breakfast and then got to work unsupervised. A lot of people took the day off to make a four day weekend, since we’re off tomorrow. It was a spectacular first snow; a succession of fast little pellets and slow thick flakes. I love working outside.
