2024 October 26 Stinky Plants

Today my Zulu Giant Ceropegia gigantea bloomed! It smells like rotten flesh to attract the flies that pollinate it. I brought this lovely cactus home from Catarina, Nicaragua in 2017. It has bloomed only twice since then. Native to South Africa, this stinky friend stays indoors in a pot here, as it can’t handle the cold.

Mesmerizing. Ceropegia gigantea

Here’s the part I’m not sure I’m allowed to post and I’ll definitely delete if anyone actually reads this. Below is a behind-the-scenes photo of the Voodoo Lily Amorphophallus konjac in our greenhouse at work right now. It reeks. And it’s awesome. When I walked in on Sunday, I thought something had died. I’m not sure why we didn’t show off this beauty. I guess it blooms more frequently than our other corpse flower. But with the proximity of Halloween, I’d think people would be curious about this deathly plant too!

Shhhh! Amorphophallus konjac
You didn’t see this. Or smell it…thankgoodness
This is a very big plant. Behind it is the serious Corpse Flower Titan arum which makes the news when it blooms. He is named Cronus. This year he opened a lovely leaf canopy.
